Brilliant Futures™ Myopia Management Program
What is myopia?
Myopia is the inability to see things clearly unless they're relatively close to your eyes. Also called nearsightedness or shortsightedness. Myopia is the most common refractive error among children and young adults. 'Short-sightedness' or 'nearsightedness' are the common terms for myopia – an eye condition that typically starts in childhood and usually requires glasses or contact lenses to see clearly. For example, the detail on a whiteboard in a classroom or the text on a T.V.
What causes nearsightedness?
There are two main factors which can place a child at risk of developing myopia – family history and lifestyle, such as reduced time spent outdoors, increased screen time, and time spent in poor lighting.
What does my child see when nearsighted?
When nearsighted, your child sees objects at a distance as blurry and not clear, making it difficult to see clearly objects that are not immediately in front of them.
The American Optometry Association recommends that every child has a professional eye exam shortly after birth, by six month of age and again just prior to entering school.

Why treat Myopia?
Leaving Myopia unaddressed may contribute to more severe sight-threatening complications later in life. Myopia increases the risk of Retinal Detachment, Glaucoma, Cataract and Maculopathy. These conditions may result in vision loss earlier in life.
